When Is The Best Time to Water Your Lawn?

In Greenwich, Connecticut and surrounding areas, the best time to water your lawn is typically early in the morning, between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Here’s why this timing is ideal:

  1. Reduced Evaporation: Watering early in the morning ensures that less water is lost to evaporation. As temperatures are cooler and there’s less wind, more of the water you apply will penetrate the soil and benefit the grass.

  2. Improved Absorption: Morning watering allows the grass to dry out by the time evening comes, reducing the risk of fungal diseases that thrive in damp, cool conditions.

  3. Optimal Growth: Grass absorbs nutrients and water more effectively in the morning. This timing also helps the lawn recover from any stress it experienced during the day.

  4. Water Conservation: Early morning watering helps conserve water as it aligns with natural precipitation patterns and reduces waste.

In contrast, watering in the afternoon or evening can lead to higher evaporation rates and increased risk of disease, while watering late in the evening might leave your lawn damp overnight, which is not ideal for grass health.

Solutions:

  • Aerate and Over-seed your lawn this fall

  • Detach dead areas in your lawn so new seed can germinate properly

  • Apply hay on dead patches to keep moisture in the ground and to keep birds from eating the seed.

  • Water 4-5 times a week, especially after seeding is done.
